Vance N. Iselman

February 14, 1920 — December 24, 2003

Vance N. Iselman, 83, LaPorte, died at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 24, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

A private family service will be at a later time. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Cutler Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Iselman was born Feb. 14, 1920, in LaPorte, to Frank and Elsie (Brayton) Iselman. On June 16, 1946, in LaPorte, he married Janet L. Haverly, who died April 10, 2002.

Survivors include one daughter, Paulette J. Miller, Pacifica, Calif.; two sisters, Thelma Hayes, Carlsbad, Calif., and Charlotte Tanger, LaPorte; four grandchildren, Darren, Nathan and Tracy Miller and Jessica Chiavara; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

One son, Christopher, died Feb. 4, 1970; and one daughter, Nancy Hockett, died Nov. 7, 1982.

Mr. Iselman worked at Iselman's Dairy, the Indiana State Highway Department for ten years and formerly owned Vance's Grill on Lincolnway. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. Mr. Iselman was active in the Boy Scouts of America and received The Silver Beaver Award. He served on the LaPorte Community School Board as well. Mr. Iselman graduated from LaPorte High School in 1938 and served as class president his freshman and senior years. At age 18, Mr. Iselman rode his bicycle 1,000 miles to New York in 11 days.
