Vera Jean Gray, 85 years old of La Porte, IN, died Saturday, April 25, 2009.
She was born April 8, 1924 in Parker, South Dakota, Daughter of the late Elmer E. & Doris LaVerne (Sloan) Benson.
She was married July 24, 1945 in Sioux Falls, S. Dakota to John Gray who preceded her in death August 25, 1991.
She was a former member of First Baptist Church in LaPorte where she had served as Cradle Roll Superintendent, and regularly attended Grace Baptist Church. Graduated from Washington High School, Sioux Falls. S.D. She received an Associate Degree from Sioux Falls College.
She worked for Kabelin's True Value as head bookkeeper for over 20 years, and was a substitute teacher for the LaPorte Community School Corporation.
Surviving are a son; Dr. David (Rita) Gray of LaPorte; daughter; Jo Ellen (Jacob) Jongkind also of LaPorte; Sister; Goldie Martinson of Sioux Falls. S.D.; Grandchildren; Michael (Laura) Gray, Timothy (Shannon) Gray, Jonathan Gray, Leo (Jan) Jongkind, Margaret (David) Rocco, Cindy (Rex) Masterson, Jackie (Dan) Edwards, Linda (David)Nobbe, and Johanna (Jim Smith) Jongkind; 20 Gt. Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister; Viola Benson and a brother; Alan Benson.
Friends will be received at the Cutler Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6-8:00 PM and 10-11:00 A. M. on Wednesday.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at the Cutler Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Kakavecos officiating.
Interment will follow in the Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date.
