Vernon C. Behenna, 79, of LaPorte, Indiana, died at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2005 at LaPorte Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at Cutler Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Laue officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. The LaPorte Honor guard will conduct military honors at the funeral home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Vernon was born August 21, 1925, in Chicago, IL to Vernon C. & Edna (Feltz) Behenna, Sr. On June 4, 1949, at the St. Stephens United Church of Christ in Chicago, he married Norma Messer, who survives.
Also surviving are sons Chuck (Sherry), Dennis (Georgette), Wayne (Cindy) and Bruce (Gin) Behenna, all of LaPorte; grandchildren Ryan, Lisa, Jason, Sarah, Leslie, Stefan, Matt, Erin, Joe, Melissa, Craig, Marcus and Taylor; 5 very special great-grandchildren; brothers Fred Behenna of Simi, CA and Robert Behenna of Villa Park, IL; and sister Ruth Dingler of Chicago, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers William, John and Raymond Behenna.
Vernon retired as assistant plant manager at Scott Foresman after 45 years. He had graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago. From 1943-1945, he served in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division in WW II, receiving two Purple Hearts. He was also a member of DAV.
Vernon enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, photography, lawn care and model trains.
