Viola Krentz passed away at home on August 15, 2016 in La Porte, Indiana, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in La Porte on November 24, 1928, to William and Louise (Pflugshaupt) Hilgendorf. Vi graduated with an R.N. from Walther Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She married her late husband, Carl Krentz, in Rockville, MO on April 6, 1951. She had known him since their first day of first grade at St. John’s Lutheran School. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2013.
Vi was Mother to five children, five foreign exchange students, and countless guests, domestic and international, at the table. She served the La Porte community by volunteering with the Red Cross during blood drives and as a teacher of Red Cross sponsored Mother-Baby classes. She worked with Youth Service Bureau and participated in La Porte Little Theater both behind and in front of the curtain. Vi was La Porte’s first lady during Carl’s term as mayor (1996-2000). She was an accomplished ceramicist, seamstress and jewelry maker. She published both a board game and a cookbook of recipes garnered from years of family dinners and travels abroad. Vi was also an avid golfer until 2012 and a ferocious bridge player, enjoying the company of her card groups until just weeks before her passing.
She is survived by her children, Karla (Brad) Stuebing, Mark (Laura) Krentz, Randall Krentz, Melinda (Paul) Burgess and Jennifer (Bill Leone) Krentz; grandchildren, Katie (Kristen Murray) and Emily Krentz, Amanda (David) Graham, Erika (Tim) Lebling, Alexandra (Ben) Ten Have, Jayce (Bill) Boy, Derek, Trent Krentz, Sam, Abby Burgess, Callie, Zoe Leone; great-grandchildren, Jude Lebling, Nolan Graham; sister, Elaine Heidel; brother, Ron Hilgendorf; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter-in-law, Kathy Danielson Krentz.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 PM with a time of visitation from 11 AM until the time of the service on October 1, 2016 at Bethany Lutheran Church. Following the service, interment of her remains will take place at Patton Cemetery, next to those of her husband, parents and parents-in-law, Erich and Callie Krentz.
In lieu of other remembrances, the family suggests that friends consider a gift in her name to Bethany Lutheran Church, 102 G Street, La Porte, Indiana 46350.
