W.O. Bill Boardman

July 18, 1922 — February 21, 2004

W.O. Bill Boardman, 81, LaPorte, died at 6:05 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21, 2004) at LaPorte Hospital.

Cremation has occurred. There is no funeral. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, which handled the arrangements.

Mr. Boardman was born July 18, 1922, in LaPorte to W.O. Sr. and Magdalene (Borg) Boardman. On July 6, 1944, in LaPorte, he married Jean Marie Bowman, who survives.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth Boardman, LaPorte; four sons, Mike (Janet), Steve (Linda) and Chris (Cindi) Boardman, all of LaPorte, and Tony (Sherry) Boardman, Wheatland, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Matt, Jenny, Sydney, Michael, Michelle, Brittany, Julie, Staci, Adam and Chelsea Boardman, and Lindsey Cooper; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Barbara LaMaster and Margaret Stepanek, LaPorte, and Mimi Toschi, Glen Rock, N.J.

Mr. Boardman was a professional trumpet player in the 1940s and '50s, playing at Midwestern locales with various big band and jazz ensembles. From 1961 until his retirement in 1988, he was co-owner/manager of Boardman's Foods in LaPorte. He was a former volunteer conductor and arranger for the LaPorte Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, a former member of the LaPorte City Band and a member of the American Legion and LaPorte Musicians Union. He attended Northwestern University and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, playing in the 740th M.P. Band for bond rallies and USO shows.
